Kristina Liulchenko, Lviv Artistic Council

Elzbieta Szurpicka, Lublin

ELA SZURPICKA (1984)

I am a graduate of the MA programme in Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. I did a scholarship at Sabanci University in Istanbul (Department of Visual
Arts and Communication Design). I am currently a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Humanities at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin in the field of
visual arts.

The topic of my dissertation is ‘Spatial installation as an immersive medium for building interspecies empathy’. In my work, I translate the spectrum of experiences
of the relationship between contemporary humans and dogs into the language of art. Significant for my research are theories from the field of animal studies, with a particular focus on the concepts of associated species and naturo-culture postulated by Donna Harraway. I draw attention to the need for responsibility in these relationships and the need to analyse the ethical and political implications of our actions towards other species.

I create installations and spatial objects and realise sculptures. I also arrange exhibitions and design sets for theatre performances and films. In my creative
work, I am interested in crossing boundaries between art disciplines and the possibilitý to collaborate with other people. I created the set design for the play “The Ark and the Ego” (collective creation) at the Dramatic Theatre in Warsaw. My scenic spatial installation was a visual essay on the relationship between humans and
beings outside the human species. I’am also the author of the multisensory installation ‘I want to be your dog’, which touches on the relationship between dogs and humans as associated species and the role animals play in our lives. In realising this project, I explored how unconditional love, tenderness and care are manifested in this interspecies bond - often more strongly than in human relationships.

At the Museum of Literature in Warsaw, I realised a performance during which I crossed out descriptions of nature from the novel Nad Niemnem by Eliza
Orzeszkowa. Situating my seemingly destructive action in the context of the progressing degradation of nature, I asked the audience what will happen when we
completely erase it from our lives and culture.
