What is to curate an exhibition? Presenting the past, narrating the present. 29th to 31st October | Aveiro
Topic:
This seminar will explore the relationship between history of art and curating, as well as the narrative production involved in curating. It will focus on contemporary exhibitions on twentieth century art. It will address the following issues:
- Curating in a centre-periphery dynamics: peripheral artistic practices, curating and history production
- The role of curating regarding pre-defined artistic canons or hierarchies of artistic practices
- Market, politics and social dynamics: curating as practice of interference
- Art history's changing practices and curatorial practices
- The role of the museum in rethinking the museum and its narratives
- Changing ways of seeing, changing ways of thinking - balancing communication, placing doubt, displaying as narrative production
The seminar will consist in exposing sessions and case-study sessions, including the discussion of essays; a visit to the exhibition “Corpo, Abstracção e Linguagem na Arte Portuguesa. Obras da Secretaria de Estado da Cultura em Depósito em Serralves e no Município de Aveiro [Body, Abstraction and Language in Portuguese Art]” in the Museum of Aveiro to be discussed in class; a visit to the Communication and Arts Department in the University of Aveiro conducted by Dr. Graça Magalhães, director of the MA in Contemporary Artistic Creation, and the participation of a visiting independent curator.

Mariana Pinto dos Santos
Mariana Pinto dos Santos is an art historian, with a PhD in History and Theory from the Facultat de Belles Arts - Universitat de Barcelona. Integrated researcher at the Art History Institute in Unversidade Nova de Lisboa (Faculty of Humanities) and invited teacher at the Art History Department. Author of the book Vanguarda & Outras Loas, Lisboa: Assírio & Alvim (2007), the catalogue Outra Vez Não: Eduardo Batarda(Serralves 2011) and several essays and chapters published in magazines, books or catalogues, about XXth century artists as well as modernity and modernisms, historiography of art and theory of art. She co-edits the literary work of the modernist artis and writer José de Almada Negreiros and has curated the retrospective exhibition in the Gulbenkian Foundation José de Almada Negreiros: a way of being modern (3 February-5 June 2017) as well as two spin-off exhibitions: José de Almada Negreiros: drawing in motion (29 November 2017- 31 March 2018, Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis) and Modern Women in the work of José de Almada Negreiros (7 July-14 October 2018, Museu Municipal de Tavira, Palácio da Galeria). She is the co-IR of the funded research project Iberian Modernisms and the Primitivist Imaginary (AAC nº 02/SAICT/2017 – 029837).

Aveiro’s Museum / Santa Joana - Auditory
Located in the city center, in Santa Joana Avenue, this former monastery houses a dynamic museum with a large temporary exhibition area, an auditory and cafeteria.
Participants and selection criteria
_The seminar is open to local curators and artists – born or resident- in any of the cities taking part in “CreArt. Network of Cities for Artistic Creation”: Aveiro [PT], Clermont Ferrand and Rouen [FR], Genoa and Lecce [IT], Kaunas [LT], Katowice and Lublin [PL], Liverpool [UK], Skopje [MK], Valladolid [ES], Zagreb [HR].
_Curators and artists should have a degree in Arts, Curating, Art History or related areas or at least one year work experience in a museum/galley environment.
Conditions
_Organization covers the travel expenses [up to 600 €] and accommodation, except for the representatives from Aveiro.
_Organization offers subsistence [meals] to all participants during the workshop [29th to 31th_October]
_Participants should bring with them a laptop or notebook
_Participants should attend all sessions of the seminar

Selection
The director of the workshop, Mariana Pinto dos Santos, will select a maximum of 30 participants. The decision will be announced on or before the 20th September 2018.
Curators and artists selected will have to confirm their participation until September 25th. Once this period has passed, organization will appoint next in the list. There shall be no right of appeal against the decision announced by the director of the seminar and the Organization [CreArt]. The participation in this work means the acceptance of this Call.
Organization reserves the right to resolve, in the way they consider appropriate, any situation not foreseen in this call.
