CreArt OPEN CALL / ARTIST WORKSHOP IN ZAGREB

THE USE OF PHOTOGRAPHY AS A SCULPTURAL MATERIAL IN CONTEMPORARY ART

led by artist Kristian Kožul

at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Croatia,

17 – 20 October 2018

 

The competition is open to 2-3 artists from Zagreb and 11 artist from other CreArt cities  (Valladolid – ES, Genoa and Lecce – IT; Liverpool – UK; Clermont-Ferrand and Rouen FR; Kaunas -LT; Lublin and Katowice – PL; Aveiro – PT; Skopje – MK) for the participation in art workshop that will be held 17 – 20 October 2018 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.

The competition is open to all artists of a younger generation (up to 35 years of age) working in different media of contemporary art practice (the competition is not limited to sculptors and/or photographers).

Foreign artists will stay in Croatia between 16 and 21 October 2018, and the workshop will be conducted in English. It will be held daily from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, followed by visits to museum and gallery institutions.

Academic sculptor Kristian Kožul and curator Lea Vene will lead the workshop.

An awarded artist with international recognition, Kristian Kožul studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and graduated from the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. In his sculptures, objects and installations he challenges the traditional sculpting medium and often uses photography in sculptural works.

The educational aspect of the workshop will be focused on learning about contemporary and multimedia art. It will problematize the relationship between photography and sculpture, i.e. the use of photography as a sculptural material.

The first part of the workshop will provide an overview and categorization of various art practices that involve this kind of artistic expression. The overview will be organized in collaboration with the curator Lea Vene, covering the span of several generations of artists whose work includes the use of photographic material. The participants will learn about the works of artists of older and middle generation, such as Isa Genzken and Urs Fischer, and younger generation of artists such as the Pakui Hardware and Anouk Kruithof tandem.

In the second part, the participants will elaborate on the concept of individual works. They will make models and scale models of works and participate in group and individual discussions about the possibilities of using photography in their own works, led by Kristian Kožul, who has also used this contemporary art practice in his recent work.

HOW TO APPLY:

Only young artists (up 35 years of age), residents of CreArt cities, are eligible to apply.

First you need to register, and then fill out the application form (if you have already registered for the previous CreArt calls and competitions, you can use the same account).

The following documents, merged into a single PDF file, must be attached to the form:

– ID or passport (scanned copy);

– short biography/CV in English (one A4 page);

– portfolio (up to five A4 pages);

 

Applications are open until  29 June

Once your on-line application has been submitted, you will receive an email acknowledgement.

Only timely and complete applications will be considered.

The results will be released after 16 July 2018.

 

SELECTION OF ARTISTS:

Based on the received applications, Kristian Kožul and Lea Vene will select 14 participants, of whom 2-3 will be from Zagreb and 11 from other CreArt cities.

 THE ARTISTS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH:

• travel expenses (plane, train, bus and local transport)
• accommodation
• costs of stay (food)
• work materials

All the expenses will be borne by the organizer, the Croatian Association of Artists (HDLU).

ABOUT WORKSHOP LEADERS:

Kristian Kožul graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1998. He continued his education at the Kunstakademie Duesseldorf Academy of Art, where he earned the honorary title of Meisterschüler in the class of Professor Irmin Kamp, and where he graduated the same year. Since 1996 he has been exhibiting independently on the domestic and international scene. He has participated in several art residences, including ArToll Labor at LVR-Klinik in Bedburg-Hau, and the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York. His most important solo exhibitions include the ones at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, Likovni Salon Celje and the exhibitions at the Croatian Association of Artists. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art PS1 in New York, Museum of Art in Haifa, ZKM / Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Biennial of Young Artists in Rome, and at the Biennial of Contemporary Art in Beijing. He has participated in numerous multimedia festivals where he presented his work and participated in discussion panels. He has won several awards, such as the "Josip Račić" Prize, the prize of VIII Triennial of Croatian Sculpture, and the third prize at the T-HT Competition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb in 2014. His works are part of various collections, such as Lauba, and the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. Learn more about the artist on his website.

Lea Vene graduated from the Department of Art History, Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb in 2013, and from the Faculty of Textile Technology in Zagreb, where she later worked as an Assistant Professor. She also worked as a researcher at the Fashion and Clothing Research Centre, as a Curator at Organ Vida, at Cultural Information Centre, Miroslav Kraljević Gallery and as the organizer of the Etnofilm Festival. She has published numerous works, participated at various conferences and won many awards, such as Franjo Marković Award for her research work on the Identity and Ethnogenesis of Coastal Bunjevci scientific project.

About CreArt:

CreArt 2.0. is a European Network of cities and private and public institutions. The project was launched in 2012 with the aim to respond to certain needs shared by European cultural institutions: to maximize the economic, social and cultural contribution that the visual arts can make to better support artists, cultural managers, the industry and the general public.

The holder of the CreArt project in Croatia is the Croatian Association of Artists (HDLU), and apart from the HDLU, the project gathers a network of partners from Genoa and Lecce (IT), Clermont-Ferrand and Rouen (FR), Katowice and Lublin (PL), Skopje (MK), Liverpool (UK), Kaunas (LT) and Aveiro (PT), coordinated by the department of Culture of the City of Valladolid (ES). The CreArt 2.0. is a five-year project that will be implemented in the period 2017- 2021.
