European Day of Artistic Creativity // Activities 2018

For EU DAY OF ARTISTIC CREATIVITY on Wednesday 21 March Metal will be formally re-opening the Edge Hill Station Garden for the growing season with the launch of a new artwork by Dave Evans.

Following a three month residency in the garden Dave will be un-veiling an organic wi-fi mast with the capability of emitting an open access network accessible to garden users and commuters. Developed in collaboration with rail users and garden volunteers this online space will aim to provide an alternative experience to people looking at their phones during the boring commute, who otherwise would not think of gardening or communicating with each other. It will bring attention to the hidden parts of the internet, the radio waves, the rhythms and the physical real world objects the internet needs to function. Join us from 5pm on Wednesday 21 March for an evening of food, music and the ceremonial unveiling of the totemic wi-fi mast. Please note our garden is only accessible via a small number of steps. Merseyside A Cappella Community Choir ( known previously as the Up for Arts Choir ) is open to everyone aged 16 and above.

There are no auditions and the only requirements are that members attend with enthusiasm and a willingness to fully enjoy the experience of group singing.

The group rehearses every Wednesday at BBC Radio Merseyside.

Pagoda Arts is highly active, it introduces Chinese performance forms to the local community and provides them with opportunities to develop their understanding of Chinese culture in a fun and interactive environment. They are particularly known for their focus on music and for working with young people – notably through their youth orchestra. Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra (PCYO) the first and largest in Europe, established in 1982 by Mr. K.H. Li and is now under Zi Lan Liao’s direction. Pagoda Arts is now recognised as a national leader in the field of Chinese music development and is known for its interesting fusions and collaborations. Apart from the culture aspect, Pagoda Arts has a strong ethos of believing in social inclusion. We have various programmes design to support health and wellbeing of the community.

Bluecoat Display Centre (BDC) will deliver a unique free artist event for the EU Day of Creativity on 21st March with ceramicist Adam Buick at the Bluecoat in Liverpool City Centre. Adam Buick is a Pembrokeshire based ceramicist and conceptual artist who also works with photography and film.

Bluecoat Display Centre (BDC) will deliver a unique free artist event delivered to coincide with the EU Day of Creativity on 21st March with early career ceramicist Adam Buick linked to our Equinox (http://www.bluecoatdisplaycentre.com/?post_type=events&p=13382) exhibition curated by one of our supporting gallery staff; Megan Hartley-Roberts. Adam Buick (http://www.adambuick.com) is a Pembrokeshire based ceramicist and conceptual artist who also works with photography and film. Before his training in ceramics, he studied archaeology and anthropology. Hence, his aim is to incorporate elements from the landscape into his works. Adam makes white porcelain moon jars, a Moon Jar is an ancient Korean form originally made from plain white porcelain. Adam was so inspired by this pure form that he now uses it as the composition for his work. He incorporates stone and locally dug clay into his work to create a narrative, one that conveys a unique sense of place. My work uses a single pure jar form as a canvas to map my observations from an ongoing study of my surroundings. Landscapes have inspired artists for generations but for me a landscape has to be felt. With my site-specific work I too am venerating the landscape. Event Schedule 1.45pm. Arrive for the event to the Bluecoat Performance Space 2pm. Welcome and introductions by Samantha Rhodes, Director Bluecoat Display Centre 2.15 - 3.15pm Adam will demonstrate various aspects of his throwing and coiling techniques. During Adam's demonstration Megan will encourage a conversation around the act of Adam's making and questions would be invited from the audience. 3.30pm. There will be the opportunity to watch some of the films Adam has made. Adam's film projects include 'Earth to Earth' In this piece a raw, unfired Jar, made from a blend of local clays was placed at the top of Carn Treliwyd to weather away. There are cycles within nature some quick, others slow and this artwork illustrates one cycle as a metaphor for all. Made from the earth, the wind and rain will return it back to the earth. 4.30pm. Adam will return to the BDC for refreshments and to give the audience the opportunity to see and discuss informally his work in the Equinox exhibition.

Approach This full-day course will use a mix of formal presentations, practical exercises and facilitated discussion. Trainer Sarah Thornton is founding Artistic Director of Collective Encounters. She established the company to make exciting, collaborative theatre and explore its potential to contribute to social change. Her work with the company has drawn on her varied background which over the past 20 years has included applied work in diverse community contexts, developing and directing fringe and professional theatre, university lecturing and practice-as-research. As Artistic Director, Sarah works collaboratively with the Executive Director to oversee the company’s overall strategic direction. Mandy Redvers-Rowe, Head of Participation Mandy’s career as a lecturer, writer and performer both regionally and nationally spans 25 years. For five years she acted as Artistic Director of North West Disability Arts Forum (now DADA) and spent many years as a lecturer in Community Theatre practice as both Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts and at Liverpool Hope University. Her written work has been produced by the Royal Exchange (Manchester), BBC Radio, Graeae, Paines Plough and BBC Television. Amanda joined the Collective Encounters’ team in February 2012.
